Hello.

As a recently graduated uni student, I know the struggle of a good opening line. But this is a new beginning and those are always twice as hard. So, I’ll start with an introduction.

My name is Tererai Maenzanise but I am more commonly known as Terry Mae, this is a side effect of going to all white schools from the age of 4. I am a 21 year old black woman. Well, I am at the time of starting this blog, and I am searching for a new purpose on this earth.

On the day of writing, I have witnessed hundreds of black people being denied escape from Ukraine via social media. They are being rerouted whilst white Ukrainians are allowed safe passage in the midst of a budding war. I am also seeing barely any media coverage of this blatant racism, but noticing domestic journalists pour their hearts out for the Ukrainians that look like them, wishing their well exit, knowing full well our tory government has frozen Ukrainian visas. What a beautiful world we live in (note the sarcasm).

Frustration aside, the point of this blog is to share moments of joy, moments of pain, mine and others. Effectively turning this into a portfolio to get journalism work if all goes well. In the meantime, I am working a neat little retail job to pay for experiences and then writing about them after.

What do you mean experiences?

Well, I mean just that. Over the past few years I have realised I haven’t done anything with my life outside of academia, no concerts, no fun friend trips, no travelling that isn’t related to school. Nothing. And I am spending 2022 changing that. Starting with domestic trips and just going out and doing things and meeting people, which I’ve already started.

Three months into the year and I have met some amazing people and tasted amazing food, which I wish I had taken more note of, so I could share it on here. But this blog wasn’t even a twinkle in my eye until this morning, when I decided to get my big girl writing boots on.

What can you expect from this blog?

From experience, I am used to writing reviews: on pop culture, on food, on life. Just little insights into the experiences i’m having. But you can also expect guides, from the perspective of a young black woman who knows very little about the world, because I have learned that you can learn from others mistakes and from their successes. I will also be doing interviews along the way, you know, to put my degree to use. I just want to make a safe space.

Also, its pronounced Teh-reh-rye May-ens-ah-nees-ay

With love, from Terry
