SPOILER review.

One thing about me is that I love a superhero movie. Or at least I used to. Post Endgame I have found that the Mouse and Marvel have been rinsing their IPs dry, leading to some of the most disengaging movies in the genre. I think their main issue is every movie is setting up the next installment, instead of being a movie on its own that just happens to link to the next film or a movie down the line.

So, when I saw that DC had come out with a movie unconnected to the Justice League (it might be connected but I didn’t see a Justice League hero in it so I’m counting it as separate), I was excited and booked tickets for me and my brothers.

The Cinema Experience

Watching the movie I had a great time. I definitely think it was one of the better DC films in a while, outside of Suicide Squad (James Gunn) and Birds Of Prey. My only semi-negative comment would have to be that there were SO MANY boner jokes. I was incredibly uncomfortable every time there’d be one cos I was sitting with my brothers and mum and I hadn’t mentally prepared for it. But the jokes got a giggle in my audience. I’m all for cheeky jokes but like one or two, not one or two per act.

The Story

So, the TLDR of the movie is an evil redhead warmonger lady who gets thwarted by an unemployed boy trying to bone her niece. Love wins the fight.

The movie starts with recent graduate Jaime Reyes trying to get a job and ending up in the wrong place at the right time. Leading to him accidentally becoming a hero with unknown capabilities and the ability to make cool anime swords out of nothing. The suit itself looked really nice, in a very Iron Man kind of way.

There was a strong theme of family throughout the movie, with Jaime’s family ultimately tying him to his goodness and I loved how involved they were in his story as most heroes have the lone wolf mentality. I really liked the relationship he had with his sister, because as a girl with brothers, it felt really realistic to me. Good job writers! (Hollywood pay them.)

The love story between Jenny Kord and Jaime felt like it could lead to something interesting in a future movie and i liked that his family really took her in, knowing that she barely has a family and what she has is not full of love anymore.

The reveal that Jenny’s dad was previously Blue Beetle and her still having access to his ‘bat-cave’ was really fun and i can see her being a great ‘guy in the chair’ even though the Blue Beetle suit is also the ‘guy in the chair’.

The ending was pretty standard. But I liked the last 5 minutes of the movie where the community came together to help the family rebuild their life. Community is something I think superhero films have always lacked – outside of our friendly neighbourhood spiderman’s movies.

The soundtrack

The first thing I noticed was the music sountracking this movie. More importantly I noticed that many of the songs featured were covers. I’m pretty sure I heard a Jackson Five song covered in Spanish, and from that moment onwards I was listening hard to the instrumentals to figure out which songs were covers and which were just spanish songs. It was a fun thing to do and I suggest you try it out too if you’re a weirdo around music like me.

DC Cinematic Universe

I’ve heard whispers that when James Gunn fully reboots DC there will be some displaced characters and I was really sad to hear Blue Beetle might be one, alongside Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker. I do hope Gunn keeps Blue Beetle in the canon because I think DC needs more movies like this one.

I recommend going to see this movie because of how fun it is. I’m gonna rate it 4.5/5 stars.
