Picture this. It’s London Fashion Week, and I’ve spent the day roaming London looking to be spotted on the streets and whisked away to be the next It Girl. I jest. But truly, I’m in London for work and meeting up with my coworkers in the big city because we’re setting up a pop-up.

Once we finished up with work stuff we headed out into the city to look for our dinner and we decided on Flat Iron in SoHo because it was close to the venue and had been highly recommended by my manager.

The Restaurant

We get to the street and the outside is just a normalish-looking door, and as we entered we were met with some stairs to descend in order to get seated at a table.

We arrived fairly late in the day so it was almost empty, meaning we got seated and almost immediately were greeted by a waiter asking what we wanted to drink. I went with a Fentimans rose lemonade, I’d usually just go with a sprite but it wasn’t on the menu.

The Menu

The menu itself was fairly simple. The Flat Iron Steak was the main cut of meat unless you wanted to go with an item from the specials menu. As a first-timer, I went with their signature item just to see how it was. Usually, I go for a medium well steak because I only like a slither of pink in the middle of the steak, not the whole inside. But I ended up ordering a medium because I didn’t want to look like a wuss around my colleagues.

For sides, I went with their homemade beef dripping chips and creamed spinach. The other options were crispy bone marrow garlic mash, green salad, truffled macaroni cheese and roast aubergine. I guess I played it safe with chips and spinach but I wanted to make sure I enjoyed my dinner. I also had peppercorn sauce on the side and all together it was a really nice meal. Again, the meat was a little rarer than I usually like and it was seasoned a bit but other than that I wouldn’t say it was anything special. I did clear my plate but I did feel weird about the rareness of my meat when eating but again that was on me when ordering.

The chips were standard. I’d never had creamed spinach before but it was pretty good. I ended up dipping the steak into the spinach more than the peppercorn sauce. The sauce was a standard peppercorn sauce nothing magical.

The Experience

It was a nice enough experience. I would consider going again and asking for my usual steak cooking level to see if it changes how I feel about the meal. But the staff were nice and at the end of our meal they gave us little tokens and we were able to get free ice cream on the way out. I really liked this idea as I don’t usually order dessert because it means more time and money spent in a restaurant but Flat Iron basically gave it to us to go.

The Cost

My meal cost a total of £25. So I would say it’s pretty standard for a steak meal. I definitely recommend Flat Iron if you want to try something new in a pretty cool spot in the capital that won’t hurt your pockets.
